The Ninki-Nanka Encounters Foundation-NNEF (https://ninkinanka.foundation/) is a Gambian charitable organisation dedicated to bringing people together to support the responsible development of the Ninki-Nanka Trail, a community-based tourism initiative along the River Gambia. The Trail seeks to unlock the region’s rich natural, cultural, and historical assets in ways that generate sustainable benefits for local communities while protecting the environment and preserving cultural heritage. The Foundation was co-founded by local tourism pioneer Adama Bah and works closely with communities, partners, and stakeholders to advance this vision.

During a recent meeting, both organisations explored ways of working with People and Places in connecting skilled international volunteers with projects implemented by NNEF and its partners. The collaboration aims to strengthen local development initiatives while contributing to the long-term sustainability of the Ninki-Nanka Trail as a unique community-based tourism destination.

A major focus of the discussions was the need to develop sustainable programmes that generate benefits for local communities while providing meaningful experiences for volunteers and visitors. Initial volunteer placements are expected to be based at the Ninki-Nanka Centre, with the potential to expand to communities and attractions along the Trail as the partnership grows.

The Foundation identified several priority areas where volunteer expertise would be particularly valuable, including community waste management, environmental conservation, craft development, and interior design. These skills are expected to help improve local enterprises, strengthen community projects, and enhance the overall visitor experience.

NNEF also shared updates on its ongoing work to operationalise the Ninki-Nanka Trail and develop additional tourism products and income-generating activities linked to guided tours, cultural experiences, and community-based tourism initiatives. Discussions included plans to strengthen engagement with supporters through a future “Friends of Ninki-Nanka” network.

People & Places expressed strong interest in promoting volunteer opportunities with NNEF through its established international networks, newsletters, and alumni community. The organisation sees significant potential for volunteers to make meaningful contributions while gaining valuable cultural and environmental learning experiences.

Several practical next steps were agreed, including the preparation of a volunteer support plan, the inclusion of NNEF within the People & Places network of volunteer hosts, and the development of a code of conduct to guide responsible volunteer and visitor engagement.

The partnership also opens opportunities to expand visitor experiences along the Ninki-Nanka Trail through additional excursions and regional tourism activities, further strengthening cultural exchange and community participation.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to work together in advancing responsible tourism, volunteering, environmental stewardship, and community development. Both organisations believe the partnership will create lasting benefits for local communities while helping to showcase the unique natural and cultural heritage found in The Gambia, along the Ninki-Nanka Trail.
